It was an awakening of my soul from a long hibernation of depression. It was a year of self reflection, healing traumas, redemption, and really getting to know myself better. In understanding myself, I’ve been researching my roots and origin story by uncovering my family’s immigrant journey to the West. Their stories of navigating a strange foreign land, their hopes and dreams for a brighter future, and the fear of losing what’s been left behind. What manifested from this deep self reflection is a collection of characters made from recycled sport materials. Each piece is handmade, sewn together using quilting and mending techniques. The NW Portland Transfer Station, located in the industrial district adjacent to Forest Park, is unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. The station has its own unique ecosystem with its scent of decay, moss, and a hint of cinnamon spice. Its landscape is bordered by concrete and metal, with waves of trash constantly in motion, transforming the surroundings every minute. The station even has 3 resident falcons who manage local rodent populations.  The Glean residency lasted 8 months with 25+ trips to the Transfer Station, where I scavenged 1,040 lbs of trash. Prior to this experience, I had never experienced where my and our community’s throwaway goes, but working at the transfer station opened my eyes to the sheer volume of waste we create. It was both incredible and harrowing to witness the operations at the station, seeing and working in the constant flood of debris left behind by the residents of our city - which the majority of residents aren’t even aware of. I hope my work isn’t just appreciated for the design and construction but unlocks your imagination: What might a world look like where we can no longer hide away our refuse? How might we adapt and adopt? What were the towers erected for and what real or imagined cultural references do we impose on them?   I began to imagine a world where the tides of trash and refuse are no longer kept at bay, where trash has overwhelmed our planet and spilled beyond the hidden places and landfills. It explores the use of AI to recreate the undocumented and erased history, questions the stereotypes of AI in representing minorities, and considers the use of AI as a creative tool. # All images and copy are created entirely by Artificial Intelligence This work explores what it means to be seen, not seen, The 7-month Artist Residency at Portland Chinatown Museum is an exploration of immigrants from the Pearl Delta River (modern-day Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao Bay Area) and their brave journey to the West. **These immigrants took great risks to travel into the unknown to create new homes and communities while living between two cultures and often working jobs on the edges of society. Inspired by the development of the play and characters, this artwork takes moments from the play and interprets them into poster-size digital prints and a 6-foot-tall rice wall installation. My goal was to integrate theatrical elements like lighting, props, and mise-en-scene into the work while exploring the use of rice asa sculptural medium.
